About a year ago pop musician Prince died suddenly, and it was discovered that he had no will.  His tremendous wealth was, in a sense, “up for grabs.”  Two weeks later the Gallup organization launched a poll to find out how many other Americans might be in a similar situation.

Here are the findings:

  • 44% of Americans say they have a will.
  • That figure was 51% in 2005; 48% in 1990.
  • 68% of those over 65 say they have a will, but only 14% of those under 30.
  • Nearly 4 in 10 with incomes over $100,000 per year are without wills.

I think I can surmise with some assurance that none of us have the wealth of someone like Prince.  But we do have some wealth — we are blessed with assets for our use, and for being a blessing to others.  We are called to be good stewards of the resources that God has given us.  Yet many do not consider a well-planned or consistent giving strategy during our lifetime.  Some people give on impulse and others give with caution.  But we all want to make a difference, and we all want to contribute to what we value during our lifetime.  God calls us to have a generous spirit – always.

Good financial planning is important not just for our monthly and yearly budgets, but for long-range goals as well.  It is of utmost importance to our families, our friends, and our valued causes, including our church, that every adult have a current and updated will.  There is no ideal age at which to begin the process, but there is an ideal time to begin – AND THAT TIME IS NOW!
